STEP 01

Find the charges in the statements

The most reliable list of subscriptions is in the bank and credit card statements. Sit with your parent and look through the last three months for charges that repeat. Then look back over a full year, because annual renewals only show up once.

Watch for small amounts. A $4.99 app or a $9.99 cloud plan is easy to miss and adds up over time. Note the name on each charge, the amount, how often it bills, and which card or account pays it.

STEP 02

Check the stores that bill on your parent's behalf

Many subscriptions don't appear under their own name on a statement. They're billed through Apple, Google or Amazon, so the charge just says "Apple.com" or "Google." To see the individual subscriptions, check each store:

  • iPhone or iPad: Settings → your parent's name → Subscriptions
  • Android: Settings → Google → Manage your Google Account → Payments & subscriptions → Manage subscriptions, or visit play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions
  • Amazon: Account → Memberships & Subscriptions

It also helps to search your parent's email for words like "receipt," "renewal" and "your subscription." Those emails often name services the statements don't make obvious.

STEP 03

Decide together what stays

Before you cancel anything, ask your parent. Some subscriptions look unused but aren't. A puzzle app may be part of their morning, or a cloud plan may be the only place their photos are backed up. Cancelling storage without moving the photos first can put them at risk.

For the ones your parent no longer wants, cancel through the same place the subscription was started, whether that's the app store or the company's website. Keep a note of each cancellation and the date. Then check the next statement to make sure the charge actually stopped.

STEP 04

Keep a short list for the future

A list of your parent's active subscriptions saves the family a long search later, whether your parent needs help with bills or the family is settling their affairs. After a death, subscriptions keep billing until someone stops them, and without a list, the statements are the only clue. Write down each subscription, what it costs, and which card pays for it.

The thing to remember

The statements show what the apps don't. Find the charges with your parent, ask before you cancel, and keep a short list.
